Surfin': Old and New, But Nothing Blue

09/12/2008

Haminfobar is a tool bar for Amateur Radio that "has everything you can possibly imagine for the hobby and best of all, it's free," according to Stuart Hills, who e-mailed me about this Web browser add-on. It allows you access current DX news, propagation predictions, maps, charts, ham radio search engines and podcasts and lots more. It is available for the Windows version of Internet Explorer and the Windows, Mac and Linux versions of Firefox.

Murphy visited last week's installment of Surfin' featuring the Morse Code decoder application, CW Skimmer. Between the time I wrote the column and the time it appeared on the Internet, the tutorial link in the column changed. So, early readers who found a broken link may want to revisit that column now that we updated the faulty link.

Hessu Hannikainen, OH7LZB, noticed the Surfin' installment about OpenAPRS two weeks ago and wrote that we might be interested in taking a quick look at a similar Web site he started building a couple years ago. It has many similarities to the Open APRS Web site, but the feature set is slightly different. I checked out Hessu's Web site and found that it is similar and different than the Open APRS Web site, and is definitely worth a visit.

While on the subject of the Open APRS Web site, a few readers complained that they had trouble getting the Web site to work for them. I could never duplicate their problems, so I don't know if the source of their problems were computer, browser, network and/or site related. Like many Web sites, it is a work in progress, so maybe what did not work yesterday works today, so try again.

Until next time, keep on surfin'!

Editor's note: Stan Horzepa, WA1LOU, appreciates oldies, but goodies -- especially since he is becoming one himself. To communicate with Stan, send him e-mail or add comments to his blog. By the way, every installment of Surfin' is indexed here, so go look it up.
