Surfin’: Eschewing Clutter

03/11/2011

By Stan Horzepa, WA1LOU
Contributing Editor

This week, Surfin’ complains about the clutter confounding the Internet.

Clutter clutters my garage, but most of the time it is not in my face, so it is not a bother “out of sight, out of mind,” so to speak. On the other hand, I run into clutter all day long while I surf the Internet.

Cluttered websites and web pages are everywhere. They are hard on the eyes. They look disorganized -- and in this case, looks are seldom deceiving. Clutter makes it difficult to find things and makes a website or webpage look ugly.

I avoid Internet clutter whenever I can; I prefer websites and web pages that are clean and simple.

Clean and simple is harder to achieve than clutter. Clean and simple means some thought went into the organization of the website or web page. As a result, it is easy on the eyes and it is easy to find what you seek.

For example, the Propagation page at DX.QSL.NET is very clean. There is a lot of information on that page, but there is no clutter. Lots of white space makes it easy on the eyes. I bookmarked the page because when I want propagation information, I can find it quickly there.

Until next time, keep on surfin’!
