Welcome! We're glad you stopped by.

Whether you are a newly licensed amateur, an experienced operator, or simply interested in learning more about amateur radio, the Amateur Radio Association of the Southern Tier (ARAST) invites you to become part of our local amateur radio community.

ARAST has approximately 100 members from Chemung County and neighboring counties in New York and Pennsylvania. Our members have a wide range of interests and experience levels, and we encourage everyone to participate at whatever level is comfortable for them.

What Does ARAST Offer?

ARAST provides opportunities to learn, operate, socialize, and serve our community.

Our members participate in many different aspects of amateur radio, including:

  • Local FM and digital repeater operation

  • Morse Code (CW)

  • Digital modes

  • Amateur radio satellites

  • Contesting

  • Slow-scan television (SSTV)

  • Antennas and radio equipment

  • Emergency and public-service communications

  • Field Day and other operating activities

  • Regularly schedule Volunteer Examiner (VE) amateur radio license examinations

You don't have to be an expert—or even know exactly what interests you yet. One of the advantages of belonging to a club is having other amateurs available to answer questions and help you explore the hobby.

Monthly Meetings

ARAST meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

Chemung County Amateur Radio Emergency Operations Center
41 Soaring Hill Drive
Elmira, NY 14903
Next to the National Soaring Museum

Meetings are open to anyone interested in amateur radio and are also available on Zoom.

Our meetings provide an opportunity to meet other members, learn about amateur radio, discuss equipment and operating techniques, and hear about upcoming club activities.

Community Service and Emergency Communications

ARAST is closely affiliated with the Chemung County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (CCARES).

CCARES is part of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), sponsored by ARRL — The National Association for Amateur Radio.

CCARES members volunteer their time and amateur radio skills to provide communications support for community events and emergencies.

CCARES participates in activities such as:

  • Winter Field Day

  • ARRL Field Day

  • Chemung County Fair–First Responders Day

  • Strong Kids, Safe Kids

These activities provide opportunities to practice the communications skills and procedures that can be useful during an emergency.

CCARES also conducts meetings and training nets for those interested in emergency communications and public service.

More information about CCARES is available at:

www.arasth3.org/ccares/

Why Join ARAST?

You don't have to participate in everything the club does. Some members enjoy the social side of amateur radio. Others are interested in emergency communications, digital modes, contesting, antennas, repeaters, or simply having someone nearby who can help when they have a radio problem.

That's the great thing about amateur radio: there's always something new to learn.

ARAST gives you an opportunity to:

  • Meet other amateur radio operators in the Southern Tier

  • Learn from experienced hams

  • Get help with radios, antennas, and operating techniques

  • Participate in nets and club activities

  • Take part in public-service and emergency communications

  • Explore new areas of the hobby

  • Make amateur radio a social activity as well as a technical one

We'd Like to Have You as a Member!

If ARAST sounds like the kind of club you'd like to be part of, we'd be happy to have you join us.

Simply complete a membership application and return it to us www.arasth3.org/membership

Membership information and additional club information are also available on our website.

Amateur radio is more than owning a radio and having a license. It's about the people you meet and the things you can do with the hobby.

Come to a meeting. Check into a net. Ask a question. Bring us your radio problem.

Get involved at whatever level works for you—we'd like to hear you on the air!
